Cycling Scotland currently provide the Bikeability Scotland programme for primary school children, from primary five upwards. Through the provision of sessions, they were finding that more children getting to this stage were unable to ride a bike which would hinder their ability to successfully take part.

Cycling Scotland secured an award from the People's Postcode Lottery Dream Fund in 2014 and jointly launched the Play on Pedals project together with CTC The National Cycling Charity, Play Scotland and The Bike Station Glasgow.

Play on Pedals is designed to introduce pre-school children to balance bikes and using a variety of games and exercises, develop their skills to progress to pedal bikes without the use of stabilisers. Children's progress is assessed through the activities over an 8-week course.

Play on Pedals have been delivering free instructor training to nursery staff in order that staff can deliver to their children. Play on Pedals also offer additional training for instructor trainers and maintenance. Nurseries will also receive free resources to use for the training period, balance bikes, pedal bikes and helmets.

If you are interested in providing the Play on Pedals project within your nursery, Bounce Early Years Activity together with Play on Pedals are able to organise instructor training in your area in order to train your staff for free and organise resources. Bounce Early Years Activity can also support your nursery in the delivery of the Play on Pedals or deliver sessions for you.
